AFRO SYNTHETIC: THE WHY?

Why? They say if you can answer the “why” then you can begin your cinematic journey. But for me the journey for this series started with “Where"

Sitting in a cinema in Berlin, back in 2017, watching BLADE RUNNER 2049, the question I had in my mind was “Where?”. Where is Africa in this Sci Fi world? Is it as advanced? Is it still frozen in time? Would we still experience the same journey as the protagonist in this film?

And it is those questions that opened up my mind to ask, Where is Africa’s future heading to in a scientifically advanced world?

And that led me to develop AFRO SYNTHETIC, an anthology series that will create stories that will show where Africa is in a scientifically developed world and what this would mean for the continent. The series is meant to show that given any circumstance, humans will always be human. For so long, Africa hasn't been showcased as a pioneer of much in this world. If Africa was given the same/if not more opportunities to be advanced would we still react the same way? Will our human instinct triumph over all the adversity we have faced? Would we treat technology and all it's advancements the same? Or would we be as flawed as humanity itself? Science fiction is the best way to hold up a mirror to society.  What better way to reach the human mind than with a glorious action story filled with blasters, super-rockets, energizers and what not. Carefully sandwiched in between the action, little gems of information that will impart a perspective on our society as a whole?

With each story the visual cinematic representation of African society will be pushed. What would a SteamPunk Africa look like? Or maybe a Diesel punk Africa? Or maybe a Transrealistic Africa? Each story has the potential to shape and influence the look of our African society.

I hope AFRO SYNTHETIC will start a dialogue about what we see, who we are, and the changing face of the evolving African.
